According to this book on herbal psychopharmacology, the origin of the association of flying witches with broomsticks was that witches used to make concoctions of alkaloid psychedelics that gave a sensation of flying. In order to administer them, they were placed on the tip of a broomstick and inserted into the mucus membrane known as the vagina. Flying broomsticks indeed.
